65 year old male with diabetes and arterial insufficiency presents with infected second toe on the right foot.
Previous above knee amputation of the left leg as well as 4th toe amputation on the right.
On examination, toe was red and inflamed with pus formation around the nail bed and at the end of the toe.
Infection was noted to be tracking up the foot. Pt had been seen at a state hospital the day before where he was told that he needed a surgeon. Thankfully the patient's partner contacted us and we treated his toe with BluLyte Wound Cleaner immediately.
We recommended a 10 minute contact time twice daily using a piece of soft gauze soaked in BluLyte.
Once the soak was completed, the toe was wrapped with fresh gauze and sprayed intermittently during the course of the day.
Within less than 24 hours the redness had subsided substantially and infection that had been noted moving up the foot the previous day, had resolved.
5 weeks after starting treatment with BluLyte, the patient felt that his toe was completely healed.
We have recommended the patient continue to spray the foot daily to maintain skin health and help prevent any future infections.
